Pharmaceuticals
In pharmaceutical processing, activated carbon is used to decolourise and purify solutions, and filter aid is used to separate the carbon cleanly afterwards. Purity and batch-to-batch consistency matter at every step.
Quick answer
Why is activated carbon used in pharmaceutical manufacturing?
Activated carbon removes colour bodies and trace organic impurities from solutions of intermediates and active ingredients. A washed powdered carbon is usually charged into the solution, stirred and then filtered out with a filter aid, helping the product meet its purity specification.

Pharmaceuticals: common questions
Why is washed activated carbon preferred in pharmaceutical processing?
Acid and water washing reduces the ash and soluble matter in the carbon, which lowers the risk of introducing impurities into the product.
How is activated carbon removed after treatment?
By filtration, usually with a filter aid precoat, on equipment such as nutsche filters, filter presses or sparkler filters.
Is silica gel used in pharmaceutical packaging?
Yes. Silica gel desiccant protects moisture-sensitive tablets, capsules and powders during packaging, storage and transport.
