Application 03
Filtration and Clarification
Fine or slimy solids blind filter cloths quickly, slowing filtration and letting haze or fine carbon through.
Quick answer
What does a filter aid do?
A filter aid forms a porous layer on the filter medium. Fine solids are trapped in that layer instead of blinding the cloth, so the filtrate stays clear and the filtration rate stays steady.
How it works
A filter aid forms a porous layer on the filter medium. That layer traps fine solids while leaving open channels for the liquid, so the cloth does not blind.
Used as a precoat, it protects the cloth from the start. Used as body feed, it keeps the growing cake permeable through the cycle.
- 01
Precoat
A thin layer of filter aid is laid on the cloth.
- 02
Body feed
Filter aid is dosed into the liquid.
- 03
Porous cake
Solids are trapped in an open, permeable cake.
- 04
Clear filtrate
Liquid passes through clear, at a steady rate.
Product used for filtration
What to consider
- Filter type: press, leaf, candle or nutsche
- Clarity needed versus flow rate
- Nature of the solids being removed
- Precoat, body feed or both
Industries
Filtration and Clarification: common questions
Can filter aid remove fine activated carbon?
Yes. A filter aid precoat is widely used to keep fine powdered carbon out of the filtrate after a carbon treatment step.
How much precoat is needed?
Enough to form a thin, even layer over the whole filter area. The amount depends on the filter type and area, and is usually set by experience and the filter manufacturer's guidance.
