Product 06
Silica Gel
Silica gel is a porous, amorphous form of silicon dioxide. Its large internal surface adsorbs water vapour, which makes it one of the most widely used desiccants for air, gases and packaged goods.

Quick answer
What is silica gel used for?
Silica gel is a porous form of silicon dioxide that adsorbs water vapour. It protects moisture-sensitive products in packaging and storage, dries air and gases, and keeps instruments and enclosures dry. It can be regenerated by heating.
Product overview
Silica gel is chemically inert and does not dissolve or change shape as it adsorbs moisture. It is used in air and gas dryers, in sachets and canisters that protect moisture-sensitive products, and in catalytic and industrial processes.
Silica gel can be regenerated by heating to drive off the adsorbed moisture. Bead size, type and packing are confirmed to suit your application.
How silica gel controls moisture
- 01
Adsorb
Water vapour in the air or gas is held on the gel's internal surface.
- 02
Indicate
Indicating types change colour as they approach saturation.
- 03
Regenerate
Heating within the gel's temperature range drives the moisture off.
- 04
Reuse
Regenerated gel goes back into service.
Key applications
Moisture protection
Desiccant for packaged pharmaceuticals, electronics and goods in storage and transit.
Air and gas drying
Packed-bed dryers for air and industrial gases.
Breather and instrument drying
Keeping enclosures and equipment dry.
Catalysis and processing
Catalyst support and industrial process applications.

Frequently asked questions
How does silica gel remove moisture?
Water vapour is adsorbed onto the very large internal surface of the porous silica. The beads stay dry to the touch while holding the moisture.
Can silica gel be reused?
Yes. Heating drives off the adsorbed moisture so the gel can be used again, within the temperature range suitable for its type.
Is silica gel the same as activated alumina?
Both are desiccants, but they differ in material and in how they perform at different humidity and temperature conditions. The better choice depends on the application.
